Second Grade General Education Co-Teacher

Job Description:

The DREAM Charter School Second Grade Classroom Co - Teacher is responsible for ensuring that all students are achieving at high levels academically, socially, and emotionally.

Core Functions:

  • Co-teach in a Second grade class with either a certified teacher of Special Education or with a certified teacher of English as a Second Language

  • Collaborate, plan with all colleagues, and attend professional development activities to ensure a common school wide philosophy on teaching and learning, consistency of grade level expectations, and the scaffolding of strategies and skills within a grade and across the grades
  • Use student data on an on-going basis to assess, to plan/ modify instruction, and to monitor student learning. Reflect regularly with colleagues, school leadership, and students’ families on student goals, performance, and progress
  • Administer, collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data gathered from a variety of assessments on each student
    Plan purposefully to provide students with opportunities for inquiry and constructing meaning as they build on what they know and create new learning and understandings around content, concepts, and skills

  • Utilize, develop, and adapt developmentally appropriate and engaging curricula and instructional materials in order to ensure access for all students
  • Collaborate with specialists and colleagues in designing and co-teaching lessons that integrate health and wellness into other content areas, and classroom routines when appropriate, in order to promote the development of a healthy lifestyle
  • Collaborate to design and execute individualized instructional plans for students with disabilities and ELLs in order to ensure they achieve academically, and are fully included in the DCS community
  • Build relationships with families of DCS students through frequent communication about students’ progress and ways that families can support their children’s learning
    Create a classroom community that maintains the school’s academic and social expectations

  • Actively work to improve his or her own practice, to acquire and enhance the skills and knowledge necessary for excellent instruction and to generally increase his or her effectiveness in the classroom and in the school community
  • Operate according to the high professional standards of the school

Required Knowledge:

  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission and activities of the DREAM Charter School and Harlem RBI

  • Understanding that the field of education requires us to be continual learners and professional development is the key to our professional growth and success
  • Understanding of early childhood cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development
  • Understanding and knowledge of Fountas & Pinnel Benchmark Assessment System (or similar), running records and/ or other assessment tools for early childhood students
  • Understanding of and fundamental belief in progressive educational philosophy and practices
  • Understanding that for optimal learning to occur behavior must be a part of the instructional program, and that it is a teacher’s role to organize and manage the classroom to foster community values and student independence
  • Understanding of current issues impacting urban education

Experience/Education:

  • Masters Degree, or higher degree, in Education.
    Fulfillment of all NCLB “highly qualified” requirements
    Minimum of two-years as a teacher in an early childhood classroom

  • Demonstrated successful record of prior employment in an educational environment
  • Appropriate New York State certifications
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) helpful
    Experience working with diverse populations of students, parents and families

  • Experience working with students at-risk of educational failure
